URGENT! March 17th: We Need You There!
The Public Health Committee’s Assisted Suicide bill HB 5326 (AN ACT CONCERNING COMPASSIONATE AID IN DYING FOR TERMINALLY ILL PATIENTS) will have a public hearing on MONDAY, March 17th at 10:30 am in Room 1D of the Legislative Office Building.
Family Institute of Connecticut Action needs as many people as possible to attend the Mar. 17th public hearing and testify against the Assisted Suicide bill. Please clear your calendar now and notify every like-minded person you know to do likewise.
Though FIC Action and our allies crushed Assisted Suicide at the state Capitol just last year–and it is the exact same legislature convening this year–the George Soros-funded pro-assisted suicide group is using its great wealth to force our overburdened state government to take up the issue again in the 2014 “short session."
We have to respond. We have to show up at the public hearing on Monday, March 17th and testify against the Assisted Suicide Bill.
FIC Action does not support keeping a patient alive by extraordinary means against that patient’s will. We support true aid-in-dying, which is hospice care. What we oppose is licensing doctors to prescribe lethal drugs for the purpose of taking a human life, prescribing suicide as a treatment.
And we are not alone. The Connecticut Hospice Association, Connecticut Medical Association, disability rights advocates and many on the political Left joined FIC Action last year in opposing assisted suicide because it is bad public policy that puts vulnerable populations at risk. We can find alternatives for easing pain without passing a law that could put pressure on the elderly and people with disabilities to feel that they are a burden and should end their lives.
The societal implications of legalizing assisted suicide are staggering. Government and doctors would be endorsing suicide. One Connecticut legislator at the "Compassion and Choices” press conference last year admitted under questioning that once this first bill is passed, they could come back for a second bill to allow the mentally incompetent to take their own lives. In Belgium, a law to euthanize children has been passed. In Oregon, patients desiring treatment under the Oregon Health Plan have been offered assisted suicide instead.
We cannot let this happen in Connecticut. FIC Action needs your help to stop the Assisted Suicide bill. Here are five ways that you can fight back:
1) Use our Grassroots Action Center to send an e-mail directly to your state senator and state representative by clicking on the link at the bottom of this message. The link will direct you to another screen with a “take action” button at the bottom. Click on the “take action” button to e-mail your legislators. We have provided some basic points, but please either put the message in your own words or add a brief introduction and conclusion! Personalized messages have a much greater impact. Let our legislators know that you want them to vote NO on HB 5326 and any other bill that legalizes Assisted Suicide. https://www.votervoice.net/FICT/Campaigns/30344/Respond
2) In addition to your own legislators, contact the members of the Public Health Committee now and ask them to vote NO on HB 5326. Their contact information can be found here. http://www.ctfamily.org/blog/2014/03/12/ask-public-health-committee-to-vote-no-on-assisted-suicide/
3) Attend the public hearing and testify against HB 5326, the Assisted Suicide bill. The Public Health Committee will hold a public hearing on Monday, March 17, 2014 at 10:30 A.M. in Room 1D of the Legislative Office Building (300 Capitol Avenue, Hartford, limited free parking available in the garage). https://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr&daddr=300+Capitol+Ave%2C+Hartford%2C+Connecticut+06106&hl=en&geocode&mra=ls&sll=41.763419%2C-72.685452&sspn=0.010531%2C0.022445&g=300+Capitol+Ave%2C+Hartford%2C+Connecticut+06106&ie=UTF8&z=16
The Committee is accepting electronic testimony via email at phc.testimony@cga.ct.gov. Please submit electronic testimony no later than 5:00 P.M. on Friday, March 14, 2014. If you are unable to submit electronic testimony, please submit 5 copies of written testimony no later than 8:30 A.M. on Monday, March 17, 2014 in Room 3000 of the LOB. Testimony submitted after the deadline will be made available after the hearing. Sign-up for the hearing will begin at 9:00 A.M. in the First Floor Atrium of the LOB but FIC Action encourages you to show up as early as possible because the sign-up line for this bill will be long and stacked early by our opponents. Speakers will be limited to three minutes of testimony. Bills will be heard in the order listed in the Bulletin and HB 5326 is listed as 5th out of 5 bills to be heard that day. Please plan now to take March 17th off from work and invite others to join you.
